The Hungry Jacks Incident
While I am wallowing in the misery of being sick, I thought I'd share my most embarrassing moment with you. I hasten to add that this happened many years ago, when I was the harrassed mother of two small children. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
We occasionally treated ourselves to take-away from the local Hungry Jacks store and they had just opened the very first drive thru - a new and novel way to buy one's hamburger and chips that I knew nothing about.
Anyway, with two little darlings in the back of the car who had the glint of mischief in their eyes, I decided to avoid the 'running around the store chasing the naughty children' saga and give this drive thru thingy a go.
But what to do? I'd never seen a drive thru before. I can do this I thought, I'm an intelligent girl. Here we have a driveway, a giant menu and a box on a pole which I cleverly ascertained to be a microphone. Well, it's obvious what one does, one stops the car at the start of the driveway, gets out and walks to the front of the car to squat, yes SQUAT beside the microphone in order to speak clearly and loudly into it.
Now, when I contemplate this incident I can picture the drive thru attendant tearing off her headset as she was undoubtedly deafened by the bellowing of a woman whose lips were much much too close as she ordered her Happy Meals. I also wonder if she pointed out this scenario to her colleagues.
"Hey you guys, come here quick!! Check out the image from the security camera. There's a lunatic woman out there hugging the microphone pole and she's talking VERY LOUD."
I couldn't detect even the slightest hint of snorting laughter as she said "Please drive forward to window number 2" - such self control. And I don't even recall a large audience of staff checking me out when I finally drove around to collect our dinner but I'm sure they were there hovering in the background.
Do you know it was months later when I discovered the correct way to use a drive-thru and when I think about it now - oh my god - HOW EMBARRASSING!! :-)
